Challenges & Successes in Design and Construction (USGBC)

Join the Green Building Council at Harris-Stowe State University for a presentation on challenges and successes in the design and construction of the HSSU Early Childhood Development/Parent Education Center, currently seeking LEED Gold certification. During the design of the project the Owner had yet to determine if the project should be LEED certified and at what level. After several meetings to discuss the pros and cons of certification it was determined to pursue a Silver level when the design was nearly 95% complete. Behind schedule and over-budget according to the Construction Manager's estimates, the project team faced major challenges. Learn how these challenges were overcome and how the building is now expecting Gold level certification, while being completed on schedule and nearly a million dollars under budget. After the formal presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to take a self-guided tour through the building with designated stops including classrooms, the pervious paved drive, and rain garden. Presenters: Don Koppy, Vice President and Director of Architecture, KAI Design & Build; Mike Kozeny, Vice President, Kozeny-Wagner, Inc.   The Wal-Mart Sustainability Index. Is Your Business Ready?
Impact of sustainability rating of consumer products on St. Louis business. A panel of sustainability experts (John W. Traeger www.gjn.com , Tony Calandro www.voxglobal.com , Eric Olson www.bsr.org) will present an overview of Wal-Mart's efforts to develop a “Sustainability Index.” This index is a first step towards providing consumers with the ability to comparison shop based on, among other things, the amount of carbon used to deliver a product to a Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club store. The panel will discuss the reasons behind Wal-Mart’s efforts and how the index and sustainability labels will be developed. The panel will also discuss other key initiatives and trends that are driving corporate sustainability programs including: (1) growing interest with mainstream investors; (2) the recent Copenhagen Accord; (3) corporate disclosure obligations; and, (4) marketing opportunities that advance the sale of products/services and enhance a company’s public image. Finally, a case study of AT&T’s sustainability initiatives will be discussed. The case study will look at the reasons behind these efforts; the ways in which sustainability is being integrated inside the company; and, the opportunities the company sees in a low carbon economy. At St. Louis RCGA Regional Collaborative Center; One Metropolitan Square, Suite 1300; St. Louis, Missouri 63102. This is a free event; please RSVP Michele Kingsley at (314) 615-6094 or MAKingsley@gjn.com.
